Lakers hold off Panthers' rally
Detroit Lakes won seven matches in a row to rally from an early deficit and defeat the Park Rapids wrestling team 38-27 in a Mid-State Conference match Tuesday night at the Century School gym.
Ben Baumgartner and Laine Jensen opened the meet by winning matches to give the Panthers a 6-0 advantage before two pins, a forfeit and four decisions gave Detroit Lakes a 32-6 cushion.
Baumgartner used a reversal in the third period for a 2-1 win at 103 pounds while Jensen used an escape and two nearfalls in the third period to spark a 6-2 minor decision at 112 to give the Panthers the early lead.
The Panthers trailed 32-6 with five matches to go when Danny Pike's first-period pin at 160 and Jared Nash's forfeit win at 171 closed the gap to 32-18. Pike recorded his pin at the 1:47 mark. Nash is rated No. 10 at 171 pounds in this week's state Class A poll.
A battle of two ranked wrestlers at 189 decided the outcome. Alex Feldt, who is rated No. 9 at 160 pounds in the Class AA poll, faced a 5-0 deficit against Park Rapids' John Drury, who is rated No. 9 at 189 in the Class A poll. Drury used a takedown and nearfall in the first period to build an early lead. Feldt countered with a pair of takedowns in the second period to pull to within 6-5 before a reversal set up a pin at the 4:10 mark to give the Lakers a 38-18 edge.
Park Rapids ended the match with two wins as Brandon Ritter posted a 7-2 minor decision at 215 and Kenny Weaver recorded a pin in the heavyweight bout. A takedown in the first period, a reversal in the second period and a takedown in the third period gave Ritter the win while Weaver led 1-0 with a second-period escape before recording a pin at the 5:10 mark to end the match.
Detroit Lakes improved to 4-3 in dual meets.
The loss dropped Park Rapids to 5-8 in dual meets entering Thursday night's triangular meet with Crosby-Ironton and Walker-Hackensack-Akeley/Nevis. The Panthers wrestle Crookston at home Tuesday night.
