Century School fourth-graders took time to assemble meals for those in need before Christmas break.

Students in Val Burton's class packaged meals for the Park Rapids area Kids Against Hunger satellite group.

Malcolm Maxwell is on the Kids Against Hunger board of directors and helped students with an assembly line to package the meals. He is passionate about the mission to help feed those who are hungry.

The meal includes a fortified rice-soy mixture with dehydrated vegetables and 21 essential vitamins and minerals. Each bag contains six servings and is ready to serve in less than 20 minutes by simply boiling water. The bags are weighed, boxed and then shipped.

Pastor Mark Waller from Faith Baptist Church in Park Rapids is director of the program and was on hand to prepare some of the meal for students to try.

Since the birth of the local Kids Against Hunger satellite in 2003, groups from Park Rapids and surrounding areas have assembled nearly two million meals. These meals have gone to local food shelves and around the world - particularly to Haiti where residents were devastated by an earthquake.

It took six years to reach the first million and only three years to achieve the second million. The meals packaged this year alone will surpass 400,000.

Kids Against Hunger is also gearing up for a celebration in January.

On Saturday, Jan. 14, all are invited to come and help celebrate the packaging of the two-millionth meal. The goal is for 60 people to come and package 20,000 meals. Volunteers may arrive any time between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at the Park Rapids Area High School commons area.

The suggested donation for participation is $10 per person per hour to help offset the cost of supplies. Each meal packaged costs about a dollar and feeds six people.
