Jerome "Jerry" Herman, 71, of Dent, Minn., died Friday, April 11, 2008 at his home on Star Lake.
Jerome was born to Valentine and Bernice (Adams) Herman on March 25, 1937, at Sartell, Minn. He graduated from Sauk Rapids High School and enlisted in the Navy. He served in the Seabees (Construction Battalion Unit), 1954-58.
On April 1, 1958, Jerome married Karen Lowe in St. Cloud. He graduated from Winona State College, Winona, Minn. He began his teaching career in Illinois, and came to Detroit Lakes in 1966 to continue his teaching. He was an industrial arts teacher in both the Detroit Lakes senior high and junior high schools. In 1993, health problems forced him to leave the teaching field. In 2002, Jerry and Karen retired to a lake home on Star Lake, near Dent.
Jerry enjoyed the outdoors and was an avid fisherman and hunter, enjoying sharing his experiences with his students over the many years.
Jerry will be remembered and missed by his wife of 50 years, Karen Herman; two daughters, Lisa (Thomas) Campbell of Montebello, N.Y., and Lynn (George) Wolf of Grand Forks, N.D.; two sons, Craig (Jonette) Herman of Raleigh, N.C., and Thomas (Christine) Herman of Blaine, Minn.; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Preceding him in death were his parents and two infant children.
Memorial donations received will be presented to the Dent American Legion Post 148 in memory of Jerry Herman, to set up a scholarship to be awarded to a deserving student or students.
Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday, April 16 at the David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes, continuing for one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Funeral services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Thursday, April 17, in First Lutheran Church of Detroit Lakes. Interment will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery in Detroit Lakes.
