Jack W. Skaar, 83, of Park Rapids, died Monday, July 21, 2014 at Essentia Health Center in Fargo, N.D.

Jack Wayne Skaar was born June 11, 1931 in St. Paul, the son of Christian and Grace (Lundeen) Skaar. He grew up and attended Johnson High School in St. Paul.

In 1948, at the age of 17 he enlisted into the U.S. Air Force. He became a trained aircraft mechanic, and he was stationed in Montana, Texas, and Hawaii. He was honorably discharged in 1952.

He was united in marriage to June Ellen Fagen Feb. 28, 1953 in St. Paul. They lived and worked in St. Paul where they raised their family. Jack worked for 20-plus years for 3M-St. Paul retiring as a draftsman.

Following their retirements, Jack and June moved to Portage Lake near Park Rapids in 1993, where they have lived since.

For many years Jack was an avid black lab dog trainer, successfully competing in sporting field trials with his dogs. He also gained notable recognition as a reputable breeder. Later years he enjoyed spending time working in his shop. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of Calvary Lutheran Church, Park Rapids, and the Otto Hendrickson Post 212 American Legion, Park Rapids.

He is survived by his four children, Joy (John) Greening of Blaine, Jacalyn "Jake" (Richard) Emerson, Maplewood, Jim (Theresa) Skaar of North St. Paul, Jennifer (Scott) Skaar of North St. Paul; nine grandchildren; many great grandchildren; one brother, Richard (Ginny) Skaar of White Bear Lake; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, June; and three brothers.

Memorial service: 11 a.m. Friday, July 25, at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids. Pastor Steve Norby will be the officiant.

Inurnment: was held at 9:15 a.m. Friday at the Bethel Lutheran Cemetery rural Park Rapids.

Visitation: began at 10 a.m.

Star of the North Marine Corps League Honors Team will provide military honors. Ray Vaadeland will play Taps.

His family has suggested memorials in lieu of flowers.
