Massage therapist Jonisa Isola uses her "full body " when she massages clients. "It's not just fingers," she explained of massage "mechanics," which employ shoulders and arms and require exercise on her part to prevent injury.

Massage, she explained, will retain the effects of a chiropractic adjustment longer, she said of Mike Erickson's practice. Conversely, a massage prepares clients for chiropractic treatment.

Isola, a Menahga High School graduate, grew up in a family with a history in nursing. She began work as a certified nursing assistant at 16 and was accepted in a registered nursing program. But at the recommendation of a friend, she decided to pursue a "hands on approach" to healing.

The mother of three boys - who give and receive massages - graduated last spring from Minnesota State Community and Technical College in Wadena.

Isola is certified in Swedish, deep tissue and pregnancy massage. She is also versed in aroma and hot stone therapies.

Swedish massage is a basic relaxation technique, releasing body toxins and metabolic waste.

Deep tissue is more therapeutic, she explained of working on the fascia (the underlying tissue of the muscle). "I work on pain trigger points," she said, which can be "very stimulating."

While deep tissue massage is not as relaxing as Swedish, it's more therapeutic. "I keep it at a good hurt," Isola said.

Pregnancy massage can vary from medium to deep tissue, with areas avoided that could stimulate labor. The change in pelvic position during pregnancy can affect the neck and shoulders, causing headaches due to strain on the occipital ridge.

Aromatherapy can be used for a variety of ailments, including colds and flu. Essential oils are useful as an anti-inflammatory and to relieve muscle spasms and treat allergies. Citrus oils during menopause ease hormonal stress.

"And they smell very good."

Stone therapy, hot and cold, increases circulation and helps with degenerative disc disease.

"Massage," she emphasized, "is not a luxury; it's beneficial on many levels."

Headwaters Chiropractic Center is located at 400 Pleasant Ave. Isola sees clients from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturday by appointment.

Gift certificates and Young Living essential oils are available.
