Hubbard County recount under way
Park Rapids Minnesota PO Box 111 56470

Hubbard County's gubernatorial recount got under way precisely at 9 a.m. Monday.

Eight supporters of DFL candidate Mark Dayton and four supporters of GOP candidate Tom Emmer gathered in the Hubbard County courthouse, the latter hoping to erase an 8,800-vote lead by Dayton.

The recount began smoothly and quietly.

No major issues were reported as volunteers alertly monitored every ballot in the hand recount.

Dayton volunteers had already assigned precincts to monitor and passed out those assignments early on.

Many of the volunteers were the same supporters who showed up for the 2008 Senate recount. They greeted each other and auditors' staff as old friends.

Many assumed the seats they'd taken in 2008, laughing to photographers that, "you could just use one of the old pictures."

The Emmer volunteers were mainly retirees with two Baby Boomers sprinkled in, including Park Rapids City councilman Paul Utke.

Dayton's volunteers were a mix of retirees and 20-somethings.

The recount was expected to take only a couple hours.
