Hubbard County receives stimulus funding for food, shelter programs

Hubbard County has been chosen to receive $8,152 to supplement emergency food and shelter programs in the county, which will be administered by Mahube Community Council, Inc. These funds have been made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA).

A national board chaired by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency and consists of representatives from American Red Cross, Catholic Charities USA, National Council of Churches of Christ in the USA, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities and United Way of America made the selection.

Hubbard County Local Board ID 4964-00 was charged to distribute funds appropriated by Congress to help expand the capacity of food and shelter programs in high-need areas around the country.

The local board, made up of volunteer representatives from the organizations listed above will determine how the funds awarded to Hubbard County are to be distributed among the emergency food and shelter programs run by local service agencies in the area. The local board is responsible for recommending agencies to receive these funds made available through the ARRA.

A meeting will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 19 at the Mahube Community Council Building, 120 North Central, Park Rapids. Anyone wishing to participate should contact Connie Walz at 732-7204.

Under the terms of the grant, local agencies chosen to receive funds must:

-Be private voluntary non-profits or units of government

-Be eligible to receive federal funds

-Have an accounting system

-Practice nondiscrimination

-Have demonstrated the capability to deliver emergency food and/or shelter programs

-If it is a private voluntary organization, it must have a voluntary board.

Qualifying agencies are urged to apply.

Hubbard County Local Board ID 4964-00 has distributed emergency food and shelter funds previously with Mahube Community Council, Inc. These funds have been designated to assist individuals with emergencies related to emergency shelter and emergency food. Funding for this program is limited and serves people who qualify on a first come, first serve basis.

Public or private voluntary agencies interested in applying for ARRA Emergency Food and Shelter Program funds must contact Connie Walz, Mahube Community Council, 120 North Central, at 732-7204 for an application. The deadline for applications to be received is May 18.
