Fargo and areas to the south are expected to receive several inches of snow today, and chances are increasing for a strong storm system this weekend, the National Weather Service says.

A band of snow that will lift north through the region today is expected to drop 3 to 6 inches of snow along and south of a line from Valley City to Fargo to Park Rapids, Minn., the weather service said. Farther south, across Grant County, Minn., 5 to 8 inches of snow are expected. Snow started falling in Park Rapids intermittently around 10 a.m. and harder an hour later.

Southeastern North Dakota and counties to the east in west-central Minnesota remain under a winter weather advisory until 1 a.m. Friday, while areas south of that are under a winter storm warning.

Chances are increasing for a strong storm system Saturday night into Sunday night, with the potential for "significant" snowfall accumulation along with strong winds, the weather service said.

"There is uncertainty with many details regarding this potential winter storm, but it is something to keep an eye on," the weather service office in Grand Forks stated on its website.
