Hubbard County Fair begins July 8; midway and talent show featured

Great grandstand shows, midway fun and 4-Hers' fine work draw visitors to the county fair at summer's midpoint.

The Shell Prairie Ag Association will sponsor the 114th Hubbard County Fair Wednesday through Sunday, July 8-12.

Events kick off Wednesday with Sneak-a-Peek, a chance to take in the rides and attractions on the midway.

Motocross returns to the grandstand Wednesday with practice at 6 and races starting at 7 p.m.

The annual talent show entertains at 7 p.m. Thursday in the grandstand. Croon your best tune, put on your dancing shoes or break out that high school band instrument and sign up. Winners in three age groups advance to state fair competition. Admission is free.

Friday is Senior Day with lunch at noon and a program to follow. The Frankie Lamb Band will entertain and Hubbard County's Outstanding Senior Citizens will be honored.

C. Willi Myles, "America's everyday comedian," entertains at 7 p.m. Friday in the grandstand. Admission is $5 for ages 6 to 15 and $9 for 16 and older.

Saturday fair-goers are invited to tractor pull events. Out-of-field competition starts at 2 p.m. and modified classes will take over at 7 p.m.

The ever-popular, ever-raucous demolition derby begins at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Hubbard County youth work diligently to prepare projects, exhibits and livestock for judging at the county fair. Each year, many 4-Hers go on to the state fair and earn ribbons for their excellent work.

4-H livestock entry is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday. 4-H exhibit entry and judging will be from 1 to 6 p.m.

Thursday starts with a 4-H horse judging and open horse show at 8 a.m. Rabbit judging is at 3 p.m., with an exhibition dog show is planned at 4:30 p.m. The annual dress review starts at 5:30 p.m.

Livestock judging of swine, beef, sheep, dairy and goats starts at 8 a.m. Friday with overall showmanship judging immediately following the livestock show at 1 p.m. Poultry judging will be at 3 p.m.

The 4-H auction (with complimentary rolls and coffee) begins at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The annual 4-H animal auction and horse fun show both start at 10 a.m. A state fair (horse) meeting will be at 4 p.m.

At 5 p.m. 4-Hers participate in a rocket shoot.

An awards program will be held at 5:30 p.m. Sunday.

Other highlights include vendor exhibits, including a mobile tattoo and body piercing facility. Also, adult craft and garden displays will be part of the fair. Activities and exhibits will be in the Environmental Education building and food - from bison burgers to cotton candy - will be available.

Gate admission and parking are free. The fairgrounds are located on Fair Avenue in Park Rapids.
