Deputies were called to a residence on Fox Road west of Sandstone at 2:38 a.m. on a report of a shooting.

A man described by police as “elderly” told deputies that two men entered his home in a robbery attempt. The man said at least one of the men had a gun. He said he was able to find his own gun and shot and killed one of the intruders.

The other man fled on foot, and a search ensued with the assistance of Minnesota State Patrol helicopter. Deputies said he probably fled to a vehicle nearby and left the area.

The incident remains under investigation with the help of the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.

WDIO-TV reports three persons of interest were arrested Thursday afternoon. Authorities say no other suspects are being sought. Authorities also found a van they believe was involved.

Pine County Sheriff Robin Cole talked about the incident during his weekly morning radio show today on WCMP-AM in Pine City.

Cole said he was on the scene at 3 a.m. and the gunshot victim “is known to the sheriff’s office.”

He said the homeowner is “OK,” as was a guest present at the home at the time of the incident.

Sandstone is about 60 miles south of Duluth.
