Heritage Christian Academy, Frazee defeat Nevis boys in tournament play

Heritage Christian Academy used a 20-4 run in the first half while Frazee relied on a 12-3 run in the second half to defeat the Nevis boys basketball team at the Park Rapids Holiday Tournament.

In the opening game, Heritage Christian used a 20-4 run to break open a 15-15 tie en route to an 85-52 victory on Dec. 27 while Frazee went on a 12-3 run to take the lead for good in a 67-60 win on Dec. 28 in the third-place game.

Heritage runs past Tigers

Heritage, which is rated No. 3 in the latest state Class A poll, relied on 3-point shooting to take control in the tournament opener.

A jumper by Taylor Chase, a layup by Jake Keranen, and a three-point play and jumper by Courtland Chase led Nevis to a 15-15 tie with 8:55 to play in the first half.

Back-to-back 3-pointers by Zach Weld and 3-pointers by Alex Esuoso and Christian Pieper sparked a 20-4 run as the Eagles claimed a 35-19 lead with 2:47 remaining in the first half. Heritage carried a 39-21 lead into the break.

Three layups by Weld and a 3-pointer by Cole Peterson pushed Heritage's lead to 55-29. Jordan Dudley hit a 3-pointer while Gavin Becker and Courtland Chase hit jumpers for the Tigers during that stretch.

Becker hit a pair of baskets and made all seven free throws as the Tigers were outscored 30-23 in the final 12:11.

Weld finished with 21 points and Pieper added 17 points as the Eagles improved to 7-0.

Becker (14), Taylor Chase (13), Courtland Chase (10) and Keranen (10) all hit double figures for the Tigers.

Balanced Hornets defeat Tigers

Four different players scored in double figures in leading Frazee past the Tigers in the third-place game.

Taylor Chase hit three jumpers and a 3-pointer, Becker hit three baskets, Courtland Chase and Keranen converted three-point plays, and Griffin Chase hit a 3-pointer as the Tigers trailed 28-25 at the half.

A 3-pointer by Cody Nordquist sparked a 9-4 run to open the second half as Frazee claimed a 37-29 lead.

Consecutive 3-pointers by Dudley and Courtland Chase and a layup by Becker gave the Tigers a 38-37 lead with 12:29 to play.

Cory Wokasch and Brady Bellefueille hit two baskets each to spark a 12-3 run as Frazee claimed a 49-41 advantage.

Baskets by Becker and Taylor Chase cut the gap to 51-48 with 6:10 to play, but Tyler Olson scored three baskets inside to give the Hornets a 61-51 edge.

Frazee sealed the win when Matt Tangen hit four free throws in the final 14 seconds. Keranen had a pair of layups and Griffin Chase hit a 3-pointer down the stretch for Nevis.

Olson (14), Wokasch (13), Bellefueille (11) and Tangen (10) scored in double figures for Frazee, which improved to 2-7.

Taylor Chase (15), Becker (13), Keranen (11), Courtland Chase (9) and Griffin Chase (9) led a balanced attack for the Tigers.

Pillager defeats Tigers

Devin Strack scored 27 points to lead Pillager to a 78-64 win over the Tigers on Dec. 20.

Aaron Jacobson added 20 points and 11 rebounds while EJ Ziegler had 16 points and 15 rebounds for the Huskies, who led 37-36 at the half.

Taylor Chase (21), Becker (19) and Keranen (15) scored in double figures to lead the Tigers.
