Haugland, Christianson, Thelen complete college track seasons
Park Rapids' Laura Haugland, Kyle Christianson and Rachel Thelen placed in multiple meets for their collegiate track and field teams this past winter and spring.
Haugland completed her second season as a member of the Liberty University women's track team. Christianson completed his senior season as a member of the Bemidji State University men's track team. Thelen finished her first season as a member of the College of St. Scholastica women's track team.
Haugland competes at Liberty
Haugland competed in the high jump in seven indoor meets and two outdoor meets for the Division I Flames.
During the first three indoor meets, Haugland cleared 5 feet, 1 inch to place eighth at the Liberty Kickoff Invitational on Dec. 3, ninth at the Liberty Open on Jan. 30 and third at the Liberty Quad on Jan. 12.
At the Big South Indoor Championships at Clemson University on Feb. 28, Haugland finished 10th by clearing 4-10.25. Liberty won the conference title with 182.50 points.
Haugland capped off the indoor season by tying for ninth place at 5-1 at the Coastal Carolina Invitational on March 3, tying for 15th place at 5-1 at the Shamrock Invitational at Coastal Carolina on March 20, and tying for ninth place at 4-9.75 at the Washington and Lee Carnival on March 27.
During the outdoor season, Haugland cleared her collegiate best of 5-1.25 to finish 10th at the Big South Outdoor Championships on April 17. Haugland cleared 5-1 to finish 10th at last year's conference meet. Liberty won the conference title with 245.50 points.
Haugland capped off her sophomore season by clearing 5-1.25 again to finish seventh at the Liberty Twilight Invitational on April 29.
Christianson caps off senior season
Christianson capped off his collegiate career at BSU as one of the Beavers' top throwers this season.
During the indoor season, Christianson placed in the shot put once and in the weight throw five times.
Christianson won the weight throw with a distance of 50-10.25 and took third in the shot put with a toss of 42-8.25 at the Super 8 meet at BSU on Jan. 16.
In the final four indoor meets, Christianson placed in the weight throw four times. Christianson finished second with a distance of 48-10 at the Blizzard Open in Superior, WI on Jan. 23, took fifth with a distance of 48-6 at the Cobber Open in Moorhead on Jan. 30 and finished second with a throw of 51-8.50 at the Beaver Twilight meet at BSU on Feb. 18.
At the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference Championships on Feb. 27, Christianson placed 13th with a distance of 48-2 as BSU finished ninth with 26 points.
During the outdoor season, Christianson placed in seven meets in the hammer throw and three meets in the discus.
At the Northern State Open on April 2, Christianson finished third in the hammer throw with a distance of 148-10 and sixth in the discus with a throw of 123-1.
At the Bison Open at NDSU on April 13, Chritianson took fifth in the discus at 135 feet and sixth in the hammer throw at 160-5.
Christianson followed by placing second in the hammer throw at 162-6 at the North Country Open in Duluth on April 17 and sixth in the hammer throw with a season best of 164-6 at the Cobber Twilight meet at Concordia on April 20.
At the Al Cassel Relays at Jamestown, ND, on April 24, Christianson placed third in the hammer throw at 158-5 and seventh in the discus at 132 feet. Christianson then threw the hammer throw 155-2 to finish ninth at the Ron Masanz Invitational at Moorhead on May 1.
Christianson capped off his collegiate career at the NSIC Outdoor Championships May 8 at Moorhead by placing 11th in the hammer throw with a distance of 141-6. BSU finished 10th in the team standings with 36 points.
Thelen contributes in first season
Thelen had a solid season competing in the sprints and pole vault for the Saints.
During the indoor season, Thelen placed seven times in the 55-meter and 60-meter dashes and five times in the pole vault.
At the CSS Mini Meet on Dec. 5, Thelen tied for third in the pole vault by clearing 8-4.25 and finished fourth in the 55 dash in 7.97. Thelen then finished fourth in the 55 dash in 7.98 at the Super 8 meet at BSU on Jan. 16 and was fifth in the 60 dash in 8.47 at the Blizzard Open at Superior on Jan. 23.
Thelen finished sixth in the pole vault (8-6.75) and seventh in the 55 dash (7.90) at the Border Battle in Superior on Feb. 6; eighth in the pole vault (9-5.75) and ninth in the 55 dash (7.87) at the Lake Superior Challenge in Duluth on Feb. 13; and fourth in the pole vault (9-6) and sixth in the 55 dash (7.80) at the Beaver Twilight meet at BSU on Feb. 18.
Thelen helped CSS win the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference Indoor Championship in Duluth on Feb. 27 by placing third in the pole vault by clearing 9 feet. Thelen also clocked a 7.95 during preliminaries of the 55 dash. The Saints won the conference title with 274 points.
During the outdoor season, Thelen placed in the 100 dash in four meets and in the pole vault in four meets. Thelen also ran on the Saints' 4 x 100 relay team.
At the Falcon Invitational at River Falls, WI on April 10, Thelen finished 11th in the 100 dash in 13.79 and tied for 11th in the pole vault by clearing 8-2.5.
Thelen then placed fourth in the 100 dash in 13.46 at the Twin Ports meets at Duluth on April 14 and was ninth in 13.63 at the North Country Invitational at Duluth on April 17. Thelen then ran on the Saints' 4 x 100 relay team that clocked a 51.88 at the Drake Relays in Iowa.
CSS then captured its sixth straight UMAC Outdoor Championship on May 1 in Superior with 296 points. Thelen finished fourth in the pole vault by clearing 9-0.50 and ran on the Saints' runner-up 4 x 100 relay team. Thelen also clocked a 13.54 during preliminaries of the 100 dash.
Thelen capped off her freshman season by finishing 17th in the pole vault by clearing 8-6.75 at the Meet of the Unsaintly at Hamline University on May 7 and finishing 10th by clearing 9-2.50 at the Eagle Open at LaCrosse, WI on May 14.
