Update: Missing 5-year-old from fatal Bemidji fire found alive

Grenade dropped off at Hubbard County Sheriff's Department; successfully removed

The Crow Wing County bomb squad successfully removed a military grenade that a citizen brought into the Hubbard County Law Enforcement Center Wednesday afternoon.

The unwanted arrival resulted in authorities cordoning off the building for the afternoon until the deputies from Brainerd could arrive on scene. The grenade was safely ensconsed under a huge pile of sandbags by the building's front door.

The woman dropped it off at the department shortly after 1 p.m., telling authorities a relative had been in possession of it and she didn't know what to do with it.

"It's your standard pineapple grenade," said Hubbard County Emergency Management Director David Konshok. "It looks to be a Vietnam era ordnance but we'll have to wait to see."

It took a robot about a half hour to retrieve the grenade and safely place it in a bomb-proof container. It will be safely disposed of in Brainerd.
