Grant Bateman, 84. of Osage, passed away Wednesday, November 9, 2007 at Palm Beach Gardens Medical Center in North Palm Beach, Fla.
Grant was born to Fred and Jennie Bateman on June 26, 1923 in Osage. He attended elementary school in Osage and graduated from Park Rapids High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation, he attended the teacher training program in Park Rapids. During World War II, he worked at an armament plant in Michigan.
Grant taught elementary school in Osage, Pine Point at Ponsford and Park Rapids Elementary School. He worked, saved and continued his education over the next several years. He graduated summa cum laude from Bemidji State Teachers College in 1955. He subsequently completed his master's and doctoral degrees at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He also studied at New York University, the University of Minnesota and in London, England.
For the last 27 years of his teaching career, Grant was a dedicated professor of education at Bemidji State University, retiring in 1987. During his life he enjoyed travel throughout Europe and the United States, visiting friends and colleagues and conducting student study tours.
Following retirement, Grant made his home on Straight Lake in Osage and spent winters in North Palm Beach, Fla. He continued to enjoy frequent visits from his many friends, family and former students who would stop by to see him.
He was loved and is survived by his niece, Barbara (David) Southward of Osage; his nephews, William (Elna) Bateman of St. Cloud and Lyle (Diane) Bateman of Sydney, Mont.; nine great nieces and nephews; 16 great-great nieces and nephews; many cousins and wonderful friends.
Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Edward and Glenn; a sister-in-law, Marion; a sister, Crystal; niece, Beverly Bateman; nephew, Jeffrey Southward; and niece, Carina Keller.
A celebration of life service is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at Riverside United Methodist Church in Park Rapids, with inurnment following the celebration. Memorials will be directed to the Grant Bateman Endowment Fund for student scholarships at Bemidji State University. Funeral arrangements are being provided by Jones-Pearson Funeral Home of Park Rapids.
