Grand Forks man fatally shoots self outside Altru ER
A 31-year-old Grand Forks man shot and fatally wounded himself with a handgun outside Altru's emergency room about 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, police said.
According to information from police Sgt. Brett A. Johnson and Altru emergency room Dr. Christopher Boe, it appears the man drove to the hospital alone and did not talk to anyone, though they didn't know if he'd been inside with the gun.
He was alone when he fired one shot into his chest and immediately dropped the gun, which was later recovered by police. The bullet did not pass through his body.
Within seconds, Altru security was on the scene followed by six emergency workers. They attempted to resuscitate him, but were unsuccessful.
The incident occurred near a bench between the doors to the emergency room and Altru's main clinic. Employees, patients and visitors gathered to view the scene at the windowed hallway between the emergency room and the clinic.
There were no notes left at the scene.
Police have identified the man's vehicle, Johnson said, but police are withholding his identity until his family is notified.
