Fred William Bliss

Fred William Bliss, 81, of Park Rapids, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at home.

He was born at his family home place in rural Nevis to Edward Herman and Dena Wilhemina (Bussman) Bliss on June 12, 1927. He grew up in Crow Wing Lake Township and attended District 13 School.

In 1945 he was drafted into the U.S. Army with the youngest of the World War II veterans. He was stationed in Germany for two years and returned home in 1947. On April 12, 1952 he married ElVeda Justine Carlson at her parents’ home in Nevis. They moved to a home on the Hubbard Prairie in 1953 where they raised six children and farmed, raising dairy cattle, Hereford beef and hogs. He spent many years logging with his brother-in-law, John DeVore. He was one of the first farmers in the county to use irrigation. He retired from farming in the early 90s.

He was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church, Nevis, serving on the church board for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Menahga VFW and a member of the Park Rapids American Legion. He was a member of the Stony Lake Farmers Club. He served on the Hubbard County Farm Services Agency committee for 23 years and was a member of the Farmers Union and Mid Minnesota Cattleman’s Association. He was one of the founding members of the Hubbard Prairie Rough Riders Snowmobile Club and the Stony Lake Beavers 4-H Club. He was a member of the Nevis Senior Citizens and a member of the Tall Pine Tom’s Wild Turkey Chapter and the Park Rapids Chapter of the Minnesota Dark House and Angling Association.

He is survived by his wife; six children: Larry (Barb), of Huachuca City, Ariz., Kathy (John) Thompson, of Park Rapids, Linda Meschke, of Fairmont, Terry (Sharon), of Park Rapids, Kevin (Jennifer), of Nevis, and Karen Danks, of Nevis; nine grandchildren; five sisters: Dena DeVore, Madeline Graunke, Myrtelene (Bill) Jehoich, Ruth Kline, and Dorothy (Phillip) Pohl; a brother-in-law, Loren Burdorf; a sister-in-law, Ramona Bliss; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceeded in death by his parents; two brothers: Edward and William; four sisters: Marie and Luella Oelschlager, Rose, and Margaret Burdorf; and several brothers-in-law.

Funeral service: 1 p.m. Friday March 27 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Nevis with Pastor A.J. Kluver as officiant. The Menahga VFW will provide military honors.

Visitation: 4 to 7 p.m. Thursday, March 26 at Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Nevis and one hour prior to the service at the church on Friday.

Interment: The Hubbard Cemetery.
