Frazee takes charge down stretch to defeat Panthers

Frazee took charge down the stretch in three of the four sets to defeat the Park Rapids volleyball team Tuesday night at the Area High School gym.

The Hornets used a 10-1 run to close Set 1, a 12-2 run to end Set 3 and a 16-8 run to end the match in a 25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 25-17 victory.

Park Rapids jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the opening set behind the serving of Erika Jerger. Katelyn Hilmanowski's two kills and a kill and block by Olivia Vaadeland gave the Panthers the early lead. A block by Justine Rittgers and Mady Vaudrin, two kills by Grace Bateman, a kill by Vaadeland, a tip by Bateman, a kill by Allie Bade, two kills by Hilmanowski and a kill by Vaudrin gave Park Rapids a 17-15 edge before Kristina Marlen served seven straight points to give Frazee the first set.

A tip by Vaadeland, a dig by Jerger, and kills by Vaadeland, Rittgers and Hilmanowski gave the Panthers a 10-7 edge in Set 2. Two tips and an ace serve by Vaadeland and a tip by Megan Grimes kept Park Rapids in front 20-15 before a block by Grimes and Vaudrin and a tip and kill by Hilmanowski evened the match.

A tip by Grimes and a kill and two tips by Vaadeland kept the Panthers within 13-11 in Set 3 before Alexis Tappe served eight consecutive points to help Frazee close out the set.

Marlen's five service points gave the Hornets a quick 6-1 lead in Set 4 before a block by Grimes and Vaadeland and an ace serve by Rittgers pulled Park Rapids even at 9-9. Four service points by Jena Rader gave Frazee a 17-10 edge before an ace serve by Ashley Thelen, a kill by Grimes and a tip by Bateman made it 22-17. Tappe served out the final two points to end the match.

Vaadeland led the Panthers with nine kills and two solo blocks. Jerger served eight points, Bateman had 11 set assists and five kills, Hilmanowski had six kills and Rittgers had nine digs for the Panthers, who fell to 0-3.

Tappe's 16 kills and eight blocks, Marlen's 11 kills and McKinzie Tangen's 10 kills led the Hornets, who improved to 2-0 on the season.

Wolves defeat Panthers

The Panthers also gave up scoring spurts in a 25-14, 25-16, 20-25, 25-15 loss to Walker-Hackensack-Akeley last Thursday night at the Area High School gym.

W-H-A jumped out to a 14-6 lead in Set 1 before a spike by Rittgers and a tip and kill by Vaadeland made it 14-10. The Wolves pushed their lead to 20-12 before two ace serves by Sarah Knight ended the set.

Amanda Trosen, Tara Anderson and Knight served the Wolves to a 16-3 lead in Set 2. A tip by Vaadeland, two kills by Vaudrin, a pair of tips by Bateman and a tip by Thelen pulled Park Rapids to within 22-13. W-H-A closed out the set despite blocks by Grimes and Vaadeland.

Trosen and Jordan Loren served the Wolves to a quick 8-1 lead in Set 3 before the Panthers rallied. A pair of blocks by Grimes and two ace serves by Katie Just gave Park Rapids an 11-10 edge. Grimes followed with a kill and two ace serves during a 5-0 run to push the lead to 19-12. After a kill by Vaudrin, Knight served W-H-A to within 23-20 before the Panthers closed out the set.

Six service points by Knight sparked the Wolves to an 8-2 cushion in Set 4. Kills by Vaadeland and Morgan Dean and a block by Grimes and Thelen closed the gap to 8-6 before kills by Dean, Grimes and Vaadeland made it 13-12. W-H-A went on a 12-3 run to close out the match.

Vaadeland led the Panthers with seven kills and 12 service points. Grimes had four ace serves while Vaudrin had four kills. Bateman and Shania Johnson combined for 16 set assists.
