Four Panthers receive Mid-State Conference honors

  Park Rapids’ Tyler McCollum, Rilee Johnson, Chris Goplerud and Kyle Goplerud were among the 20 players named to this year’s Mid-State Conference boys basketball team.

     McCollum and Johnson were among the 12 players earning all-conference honors while the Gopleruds were among the eight players receiving all-conference honorable mention honors in a vote by the six conference coaches. Those four starters led the Panthers to a 2-8 record in conference play.

     In the 10 conference games, McCollum averaged 16.6 points and 4.4 rebounds a game. McCollum shot 43.8 percent from the field (60 for 137, including 26 for 75 on 3-pointers) and 76.9 percent at the free throw line (20 for 26) in scoring 166 points. McCollum scored in double figures in nine games with a high of 22. The junior guard also had 44 rebounds, 20 assists, 18 steals and two blocked shots in conference games. McCollum was also named the Panthers’ Most Valuable Player.

     Johnson averaged 11.9 points and 4.6 rebounds in the 10 conference games. Johnson shot 45.9 percent from the field (51 for 111) and 51.5 percent at the line (17 for 33) in scoring 119 points. The junior forward scored in double figures in seven games with a high of 18 and compiled 46 rebounds, 19 assists, 19 steals and two blocked shots. Johnson received the Panthers’ Most Improved Player and Mr. Defense honors.

     Kyle Goplerud also played in all 10 conference games and averaged 7.9 points and 4.3 rebounds a game. Goplerud shot 40.5 percent from the field (34 for 84) and 53.3 percent at the line (8 for 15) in scoring 79 points. Goplerud hit double figures in three conference games with a high of 16. The senior forward also had 43 rebounds, 19 assists, 11 steals and four blocks in the 10 conference games.

     Chris Goplerud averaged 6.1 points and a team-leading 6.3 rebounds in the 10 conference games. The senior forward shot 29.4 percent from the field (25 for 85) and 60 percent at the line (9 for 15) in scoring 61 points with a high of 11. Goplerud grabbed 63 rebounds, with a high of 11, and had 23 assists, 11 steals and three blocks in conference play.

     Joining McCollum and Johnson on the all-conference team were Crosby-Ironton’s Caleb Baker, Jacob Goodwin and Daniel Hudrlik; Detroit Lakes’ Derek Long and Kirk McLeod; Pequot Lakes’ Travis Jacobson and Jordan Redmond; Staples-Motley’s Brian Huber and Seth Auger; and Wadena-Deer Creek’s Dylan Dumpprope. Baker was named the conference’s Most Valuable Player.

     Also receiving all-conference honorable mention honors were C-I’s Riley Jacobs; DL’s Jackson Lyngaas; PL’s Brett Peterson; S-M’s Jalen Busker and Kyle Janssen; and W-DC’s Blake Connell.

     Crosby-Ironton won the conference title with a 9-1 record. Detroit Lakes was second at 8-2 while Pequot Lakes (6-4), Staples-Motley (4-6), Park Rapids (2-8) and Wadena-Deer Creek (1-9) followed. C-I’s Dave Galovich was named the Mid-State’s Coach of the Year.
