Former Detroit Lakes resident dies in crash near Duluth

The names of two people killed in separate accidents in Lake County on Friday have been released, according to the Duluth News Tribune.

Minnesota State Police said Darrin J. Theis, 26, of Duluth, formerly of Detroit Lakes, was killed when his 2000 Dodge Stratus ran off the right side of Highway 61 near Knife River and hit a tree. The accident occurred at 10 a.m.

In the other accident, Sarah E. Jaeger, 58, of Two Harbors was the driver of the 2003 Dodge Dakota that was found upside-down in Lake Superior about 8 a.m. Friday. She and a dog died in the accident.

Jaeger's vehicle apparently came down County Road 3 and crossed state Highway 61, then squeezed through a thicket of pines before hitting a 20-foot drop-off leading to the lake. The vehicle was found 30 feet from shore.

State Police said that accident likely occurred between midnight and 4 a.m.
