Five Park Rapids wrestlers receive Mid-State Conference honors

Five Park Rapids wrestlers earned Mid-State Conference honors in a recent vote by the six conference coaches.

Senior Matt Weaver and juniors Jared Nash, John Drury and Kenny Weaver received all-conference honors while senior Derek Werner earned all-conference honorable mention honors.

Matt Weaver went 4-0 with three pins in the five conference matches at 152 pounds. Weaver compiled a 27-13 record this season and ended his career with 82 victories.

Nash had a 3-0 record against conference opponents at 160. Nash, who was an all-conference wrestler at 145 last season, went 29-10 overall this season.

Drury wrestled at 171 and had a 4-0 record with two pins in conference matches. Drury had a 22-9 overall record this year.

Kenny Weaver had a 4-0 record with three pins at heavyweight against Mid-State foes. Weaver ended the season with a 23-15 record.

Werner capped off his senior season by going 4-1 with one pin in conference duals for a 27-11 overall record. Werner compiled 87 wins in his career.

Nic Harrison of Pequot Lakes/Pine River-Backus was named the conference's MVP. Harrison went 37-2 and finished third at state at 135 pounds.

The other all-conference wrestlers were senior Trent Carlson (26-12 at 125), junior Jordan Bendson (43-3 at 145), junior Dylan Shequen (26-17 at 160), sophomore Chandler Trout (22-19 at 171) and junior Ryan Detloff (26-14 at 215) of Staples-Motley; eighth grader Drey Loge (26-13 at 112) and junior Cody Schrupp (29-10 at 125) of PL/PR-B; senior Brandon Baker (30-7 at 119), junior Alex Feldt (30-18 at 160) and senior Brandon Johnson (31-10) of Detroit Lakes; senior Matt Hagen (31-5 at 130) and senior Eddie Lustila (22-11 at heavyweight) of Wadena-Deer Creek; and sophomore Hayden Zillmer (47-0 at 103) of Crosby-Ironton.

Staples-Motley won the conference title with a 5-0 record. Park Rapids went 2-3, defeating Crosby-Ironton 56-21 and PL/PRB 51-28 and losing to Staples-Motley (43-25), W-DC (40-29) and Detroit Lakes (41-29).
