Fatal crash prompts highway closure near Baxter; highway now open
State Highway 371 south of Baxter, Minn. has been reopened following a fatal accident this morning.
The accident occurred about 8 a.m. near the intersection with Crow Wing County Road 48.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol out of Brainerd:
A person, who has not yet been identified, died when the 1999 Dodge Durango he or she was in failed to yield for a red light on Highway 371.
The Durango was headed north on Highway 371 when the vehicle was struck by a southbound 2008 Chevrolet Suburban turning left onto County Road 48.
The Durango then hit a signal light.
The driver of the Suburban, 47-year-old Kip L. Dixon of Brainerd, was taken to St Joseph's Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. He was wearing his seat belt.
Northbound lanes on High-way 371 were temporarily closed until they reopened about 9:30 a.m.
The Durango was totaled in the accident. The Suburban sustained severe damage.
