Fast starts spark C-I, S-M past Panthers

Slow starts led to a pair of Mid-State Conference losses for the Park Rapids girls basketball team.

The Panthers fell behind early at Crosby Tuesday night as the host Rangers jumped out to a 35-7 halftime lead en route to a 57-24 victory.

Last Friday night at the Area High School gym, Staples-Motley jumped out to a 47-19 lead at the half en route to a 75-38 victory.

The two losses dropped the Panthers to 0-9 in conference play and 2-18 overall. Park Rapids closes out the regular season at Perham Monday night and at home against Detroit Lakes Friday night.

Swanhorst sparks Rangers

Katie Swanhorst hit four 3-pointers and finished with 16 points to lead Crosby-Ironton past the Panthers.

Swanhorst hit three 3-pointers while Jana Anderson and September Prushek contributed a 3-pointer each as the Rangers took control early. A three-point play by Ashley Domino and baskets by Carson Lee Christenson and Hannah Wolff accounted for the only scoring for Park Rapids in the first half.

C-I sealed the win by outscoring the Panthers 22-19 in the second half. Wolff hit a 3-pointer and two jumpers while Christenson had two jumpers and a pair of free throws to lead Park Rapids.

Anderson (13) and Prushek (11) also hit double figures for the Rangers, who improved to 6-3 in the conference and 16-7 overall.

Wolff (9), Christenson (6) and Domino (5) combined for 20 points for the Panthers.

Cardinals take charge early

Eight different players scored in the first half and 12 players scored in the game to lead Staples-Motley past the Panthers.

Nikki Pearson (11), Caitlin Robinson (11) and Kelly Pearson (10) led a balanced attack for the Cardinals, who improved 6-2 in conference play and 16-4 overall.

Wolff had 11 points and Olivia Vaadeland had 10 points and six rebounds to lead the Panthers, who turned the ball over 28 times
