Fargo man wins beach party from Weather Channel
The past two years, Fargo's Fox Run neighborhood has stacked sandbags to shield spring flooding.
Now, sand will be scattered in the neighborhood - this time, for fun.
Far from any lake, the area will transform into a beach next week thanks to Steve Waldner, who was named the winner of The Weather Channel's "Ultimate Summer Beach Party" contest on Sunday.
"We're a pretty iconic location for weather," he said of Fargo. "I think they kind of felt that way, too."
Outside his home, 45th Avenue South will transform into a 10,000-square-foot "party space" that includes a lagoon with paddle boats, giant blow-up waterslide, live band, tiki bar - and, of course, sand.
"Our home is definitely going to be the hot spot," said the IT manager.
The Fargo bash will be nationally televised from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday.
In July, Waldner saw the contest online, entered "on a lark," and four hours of work later, sent in his video. He beat out 150 entrants for the bash.
Sporting a stocking cap, swim trunks, mittens and scuba gear, Waldner pokes fun at the area's propensity to flooding and frigid winters in his 35-second video.
