A man with more than a dozen theft and burglary charges in the past three years was sentenced Wednesday to four years in prison.

Joshua Steven Buhr of Fargo was sentenced after pleading guilty to felony burglary and theft of property charges, and a misdemeanor reckless driving charge stemming from a Nov. 5 theft of a motor vehicle.

Buhr, 23, also admitted to drinking alcohol in violation of his probation requirements for several un-related prior theft and burglary convictions.

The four-year sentence covers both the Nov. 5 incident and the probation violations.

Buhr's defense attorney said his client has continually struggled with alcohol and drugs, which led to the thefts.

"Mr. Buhr doesn't get it," Ross Brandborg said, recommending his client serve three years and receive treatment.

Assistant Cass County State's Attorney Tristan Van de Streek recommended four years, which he said was "generous."

"It's hard for me to make a better argument than just reading his priors," Van de Streek said.

Buhr told East Central Judicial District Judge Georgia Dawson he knows he really needs treatment.

"Well, something needs to change," Dawson said before sentencing Buhr to four years, saying she wanted to ensure he had enough time to finish treatment.

The sentence was also meant to send a message, she said, adding she does not often see so many charges in such a short period of time.
