Fargo man arrested in car-bicycle accident
Police say a New York man on a cross-country bicycling trip was hit by a drunken driver Monday night in south Fargo.
Burl M. McCaslin, 47, of Fargo, was arrested on suspicion of DUI and leaving the scene of an injury accident, Fargo police Sgt. Mark Lykken said.
The victim, Andrew Loaiza, 21, of Plattsburg, N.Y., was thrown from the bicycle. He was kept at Fargo's Innovis Health hospital overnight for observation and was released Tuesday morning, according to Lykken and a hospital spokeswoman.
Loaiza and a friend were on a cross-country bicycling trip to Montana when McCaslin drove up behind them in the southbound lane in the 1000 block of 25th Street South and allegedly hit Loaiza at about 11:10 p.m., Lykken said.
A witness called police and followed McCaslin's white Chevy Cavalier until police stopped McCaslin and arrested him. He was taken to the Cass County Jail.
"There are some indications that the Chevy Cavalier swerved into the bicyclists," Lykken said. "Whether he saw them or not is unclear."
The Chevy's windshield was damaged, apparently from Loaiza hitting it after he was thrown from his bike. Both bikes had safety lights, Lykken said.
