The Panthers overcame a 10-8 deficit to win the opener 11-10 and held a 9-5 lead entering the bottom of the seventh inning in the second game before Detroit Lakes used three errors and a three-run home run by Emily Seebold to rally for an 11-10 victory in this conference debut.

In the first game, the Panthers used 16 hits to spark a trio of three-run innings to win the opener.

Morgan Dean’s three-run homer gave Park Rapids a 3-0 lead in the first before a double by Brooke Jerger and singles by Lauren Naeve and Hope Johnson made it 5-0 in the third.

Singles by Naeve and Hope Johnson, a double by Dean, and singles by Shania Johnson and Bailee Jerger gave the Panthers a 7-3 advantage in the fifth.

After the Lakers used two doubles, five singles and two errors to score seven times and take a 10-7 lead in the bottom of the fifth, a single by Charity Ridlon, a double by Brooke Jerger and two errors produced the winning runs in the sixth.

Brooke Jerger, Naeve and Hope Johnson all went 3 for 5 and combined for eight runs while Dean went 2 for 3 with four RBI to pace the offense. Dean picked up the win in relief.

In the second game, the Panthers held leads of 5-0 and 8-3 before Detroit Lakes rallied for the split.

Singles by Nikki Eischens and Naeve led to a run in the first before singles by Dean, Bailee Jerger and Ridlon, a double steal and two errors pushed Park Rapids’ advantage to 5-0 in the fourth.

Singles by Shania Johnson, Sarena Kinkel and Brooke Jerger gave the Panthers an 8-3 lead in the sixth before singles by Shania Johnson and Bailee Jerger and a double steal made it 9-5 in the seventh.

An error, Seebold’s homer and another error sparked the Lakers’ comeback.

Bailee Jerger went 3 for 4 and Shania Johnson went 2 for 4 to pace Park Rapids’ 11-hit attack. Those two joined Ridlon with two runs scored.

The split left Park Rapids with a 4-2 overall record while Detroit Lakes is now 3-1.

“We showed tenacity coming back in the first game, but errors killed us in the second game,” said Park Rapids head coach Marion Goeden, whose team made seven errors in the nightcap. “It’s hard to see a game slip away when you are up by four runs with three outs to go. We’re still learning.”
