Erickson, Moren lift Panthers to 6-5 win
Frank Moren's pair of goals and Levi Erickson's goal and two assists sparked the Park Rapids-Menahga-Walker-Hackensack-Akeley boys hockey team to a 6-5 Mid-State Conference win over Prairie Centre Friday night at the Ted O. Johnson Ice Arena.
The Panthers used a 24-16 edge in shots to build a 5-1 lead late in the second period before holding on for the win.
Erickson assisted on Moren's first goal of the game at the 10:05 mark of the first period before Erickson's goal at the 15:59 mark gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead. Noah MacPherson assisted on Erickson's goal.
After Tyler Schwartz's shorthanded goal pulled Prairie Centre to within 2-1, goals by Moren, Benson Ringle and Drew Bade pushed the Panthers' lead to 5-1. Erickson and Bailey Mueller assisted on Moren's second goal at the 2:12 mark before Ian Johnson set up a power-play goal by Ringle. Raul Garcia and Luke Jaeger tallied assists on Bade's goal at the 14:24 mark.
Prairie Centre rallied behind Cody Steward's goal at the 16:12 mark of the second period, Cody Bartkowicz's shorthanded goal 25 seconds into the third period and Preston Pung's goal at the 9:19 mark.
Scott Smith assisted on a shorthanded goal by Johnson as the Panthers claimed a 6-4 lead with 49 seconds to play. Prairie Centre concluded the scoring on Bartkowicz's power-play goal with 22 seconds left.
Smith finished with 21 saves as the Panthers improved to 4-2 in the conference and 7-10 overall. Prairie Centre fell to 1-2 in conference games and 8-7 overall.
