Emerson defeats Husby on 3rd playoff hole to capture men’s title
Jim Emerson has always been a contender in the Club Championship at Headwaters Country Club since winning his first men’s title in 1999.
Fifteen years later, Emerson finally captured his second club title by rallying during Sunday’s final round to defeat defending champion Dana Husby in a sudden-death playoff.
A birdie by Husby on the 45th hole forced a playoff with Emerson after both golfers carded 183s. Both golfers opened the sudden-death playoff with pars on No. 1 and bogeys on No. 2 before Emerson’s par putt on No. 3 gave him the title.
Husby held a four-stroke lead over Emerson and Taylor Schroeder after carding a 1-under 71 during Saturday’s first 18 holes of play.
Birdies on No. 2 and No. 9 gave Husby an even-par 36 while a birdie on No. 9 gave Emerson a 36 on the front 9 Saturday. Schroeder used birdies on No. 1 and No. 9 to also open with a 36 while Lee Davis was two shots back at 38.
On the back side, Husby used birdies on No. 10, No. 12 and No. 15 to offset a double-bogey on No. 18 for a 35 and a first-day total of 71. Emerson and Schroeder fell four shots back with 39s as Schroeder’s birdie on No. 15 was the main highlight for both golfers. Davis shot a 38 on the back side for a 76 after the first day.
During Sunday’s first 18 holes, Husby pushed his lead to five strokes on the front side and led by three strokes entering the final nine holes.
Eight pars led to a 37 as Husby held a five-stroke lead over both Emerson and Schroeder after the first nine holes. Emerson opened with a birdie on No. 1 before settling for a 38 while Schroeder carded a birdie on No. 4 en route to his 38.
Husby opened the back side with three bogeys on the first four holes before birdies on No. 15 and No. 18 capped off a 38 for a 75 and a 146 after 36 holes. Emerson used a birdie on No. 13 for an even-par 36 for a 74 and a 149 while Schroeder used a birdie on No. 15 for a 37 and a 150 after 36 holes. Davis followed a 37 on the front side with a 40 on the back side for a 77 and a 153 entering the final nine holes.
Six straight pars on the second trip around the front side enabled Husby to maintain a two-shot lead over Emerson and extend his lead over Schroeder to five shots. Emerson used birdies on No. 1 and No. 4 to stay close before taking a one-shot lead with a birdie on No. 7 as Husby carded a double-bogey. Schroeder birdied No. 1 and No. 4, had a double-bogey on No. 6 and followed with a birdie on No. 7 to stay within three strokes.
After all three golfers carded pars on No. 8, Husby forced a playoff with a birdie on No. 9 as Emerson and Schroeder settled for pars. Emerson then prevailed in the playoff to win his second club title while denying Husby his fifth club championship.
Schroeder shot a 36 on the final 9 to finish third with a 186 while Davis carded a 38 on the final 9 to finish fourth with a 191. Those were the only four golfers to complete all 45 holes.
In addition to winning the men’s club title, Emerson repeated as the men’s senior club champion with a 74 during Sunday’s first 18 holes and won the First Flight with a net 70. Tim Usher won the Second Flight with a net 65 while Ron Usher won the Third Flight with a net 73.
