Emergency repairs necessitate detour on Highway 71 north
The "unforeseen collapse" of a culvert on north Highway 71 has necessitated a temporary detour near Summerhill Farm north of Park Rapids.
"We didn't anticipate the way it worked out," said department of Transportation engineer Todd Vonasek of the detour.
Nancy Utke, co-owner of Utke's Country Pine Furniture, had some concerns that "they're routing traffic away from our business."
Vonasek said the work should be completed in three days.
The DOT let emergency bids and quickly began work. Vonasek said the emergency nature of the work didn't afford project managers ample time to warn the public.
"We're hoping we're out of there Wednesday night," he said.
