Ellefson places 24th at state ski meet
Park Rapids' Summer Ellefson finished 24th in her fourth trip to the state Nordic ski meet.
Ellefson, a sophomore who competes for the Northwest Independent School, clocked a pursuit time of 36 minutes, 21 seconds at Giants Ridge in Biwabik Thursday for her third consecutive top-25 showing at state.
Ellefson finished 20th out of 120 skiers in the freestyle portion with a time of 18:14 and was 28th in the classic portion with a time of 18:07.
In her three previous state trips, Ellefson finished 10th last season, 15th as an eighth grader and 83rd as a seventh grader. Last year, Ellefson clocked a 16:16 during the freestyle race and a 19:51 in the classic race for a pursuit time of 36:07. In 2008, Ellefson had a time of 20:29 in the freestyle and a time of 18:27 in the classic race for a pursuit time of 38:56. In her state debut in 2007, Ellefson clocked a 20:04 in the freestyle and a 20:44 in the classic for an overall time of 40:48.
Stillwater senior Jessie Diggins won her third state title with a winning time of 31:28. Diggins, who didn't compete last year after winning state titles in 2007 and 2008, had the fastest time in the freestyle portion with a 15:36 and followed with a runner-up 15:52 in the classic race. Defending champion Annie Hart, a senior from St. Paul Academy, was second in 31:30, including a 15:52 in the freestyle and a 15:38 in the classic race. Lakeville senior Jordyn Ross was a distant third in 33:33.
Ellefson qualified for the state meet by winning the Section 8 title with a time of 35:37. Ellefson had a time of 19:08 in the classic race and a time of 16:29 in the freestyle race at Camp Ripley.
Ellefson will compete in the Junior Nationals March 5-14 in Maine.
