Elizabeth Lavaughn (Wood) VonBank, 87, of Nevis, died Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at Diamond Willow Care Center in Park Rapids.

Elizabeth L. Wood was born at Bradgate, Iowa Aug. 15, 1925 to parents Walter A. and Lillie Mae (Moore) Wood. She was 11th in a family of 16 children. When she was 4 years old the family moved to Irvington, Iowa where her parents continued to farm.

She attended country school thru the ninth grade, then, helped her father farm while her older brothers were in the service.

She was a housekeeper for the Walter Whitney family in Algona, Iowa, then, worked at Finn's Bakery in Algona.

On Sept. 7, 1953 she was united in marriage to John J. VonBank at St. Cecelia's Catholic Church in Algona. They lived on a farm in West Bend, Iowa, then back to Algona, where she was a homemaker for several years.

In 1967, she started working at the Good Samaritan Center in Algona, in the housekeeper and laundry departments.

In June of 1970, the family moved to Park Rapids, where they owned and operated the C&F Motel on Fish Hook Lake.

In April of 1973, she started working in the housekeeping department at St. Joseph's Hospital in Park Rapids, until retiring in 1989. After retiring she and her husband moved to acreage south of Park Rapids on highway 71, living there for 17 years.

They moved to Nevis in 1995. In January of 2013, she moved to the Diamond Willow Care Center Park Rapids.

Elizabeth was a member of Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Nevis. She was a faithful donut maker on Saturdays, helping to make many dozens of donuts as a fundraiser for the OLP Ladies Guild.

She was also a member of the Nevis Red Hatters. She was a past member the St. Joseph's Hospital Auxiliary and the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post 212 Auxiliary.

She enjoyed the Minnesota Twins baseball never missing a game on TV, also watching the Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. She loved to go to garage sales, especially with her granddaughter Jolene. She liked going to the casino and playing cribbage. She was a devoted wife and mother and made a wonderful home for her family. Her great-grandchildren Olivia and Elliot always brought a smile to her face.

She is survived by her daughter, Patty (Loy) Edwards of Nevis; son, Mark VonBank of Park Rapids; granddaughter, Jolene (Nathan) Harris and great-grandchildren, Olivia and Elliot of Nevis. She was special "Nana" to Audra Olson of Grand Rapids; sisters, Lucille Leist, Dorothy Martin, Betty VonBank, Elsie Eischen, Bonnie Esser, Mary Ann Reynolds; brother, Elton Wood; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lillie Wood; husband, John in 2003; and son, Michael in 2010; sisters, Opal Welter, Exa Mae Wood; brothers, Glenn Wood, Kenneth (Kay) Wood, Walden (Bill) Wood, Robert Wood, Condol Wood and Leonard Wood.

Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Saturday, May, 4 at the Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Nevis. Father Duane Pribula will be the Celebrant.

Visitation: 4 until 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m. Friday, May 3, at Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church in Nevis. Also for one hour prior to the services on Saturday.

Interment: Our Lady of the Pines Catholic Church Cemetery in Nevis. Friends may leave online condolences at ceasefuneralhome.com.
