Elaine E. Thom, 86, of Vergas, died on Sunday, June 22, 2008 at St. Mary's Nursing Center, Detroit Lakes.
Elaine Emma Fletcher was born the daughter of Art and Lena (Poll) Fletcher on June 11, 1922 in Dora Township, near Vergas, where she was raised and attended school at District 238. She then attended school at Pelican Rapids.
Elaine married Melville Thom on Dec. 3, 1940 in St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Loon Lake. They made their home in Vergas before moving to Lida Township, where they farmed until 1966. That same year they moved to Lake Melissa near Detroit Lakes, and in 1986 they moved to Spirit Lake near Vergas. During that time, Elaine worked for West Central Turkey Plant in Pelican Rapids and for Swift Turkey Plant in Detroit Lakes. She also worked at St. Mary's Hospital in Detroit Lakes, the Swift Hatchery and the Pelican Rapids Senior Center.
Melville died on Feb. 21, 1998 and she continued to make her home on Spirit Lake until entering the nursing home. Elaine enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family and friends that visited. She loved the outdoors, fishing and doing yard work.
Surviving Elaine are her two sons, John (Jlayne) Thom of Andover, Minn., and Jim (Julieanne) Thom of Vergas; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Preceding her in death were her husband; a brother, Kenneth at infancy; and her parents.
Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 25, in the St. Paul's Lutheran-Loon Lake Church and also one hour prior to services in the church on Thursday.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Thursday, June 26, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church-Loon Lake, Vergas with the Rev. Robert Hinckley officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
