EGF escapes with overtime win

Jim Warmack took over in overtime as East Grand Forks escaped the Area High School gym with a 90-88 double-overtime victory over the Park Rapids boys basketball team Tuesday night.

The 6-foot-7 junior center scored three baskets inside, including the game-winner with :09 remaining, in the second overtime to give the Green Wave the win.

This game was close throughout as both teams battled through 14 lead changes and 11 ties.

Warmack's three inside baskets gave the Green Wave a quick 6-0 lead before a pair of 3-pointers by Grant Frydenlund and two baskets off rebounds by Austin Holy extended the lead to 18-10 with 11:51 to play in the first half. Kyle Goplerud had three layups and a pair of free throws for the Panthers.

A layup off a steal by Jordan McCollum, a jumper by Chris Goplerud, a layup by Zach Jewison, a 3-pointer by Kyle Goplerud, and a layup and 3-pointer by McCollum sparked a 16-4 un as the Panthers claimed a 26-22 edge at the 6:00 mark.

Frydenlund hit back-to-back 3-pointers as EGF reclaimed a 30-28 lead before the Panthers used a 3-pointer by Kyle Goplerud, three layups by Rilee Johnson and a three-point play by Kyle Goplerud to close the half with a 12-2 run for a 40-32 advantage.

Three-pointers by Tyler McCollum and Chris Goplerud kept the Panthers in front 46-38 with 14:52 to play before two 3-pointers by Frydenlund helped EGF tie the game at 46-46 with 13:15 remaining.

Two baskets by Jordan McCollum and a 3-pointer and two free throws by Tyler McCollum gave Park Rapids a 55-49 lead with 10:15 to go.

After a 3-pointer by Ty Misialek, a layup by Tyler McCollum, a jumper by Johnson and a layup off a steal by Kyle Goplerud gave the Panthers their biggest lead of the night at 61-52 with 8:32 left.

The Green Wave responded with a 16-6 run as a three-point play and layup by Ben Bjornson, and a 3-pointer and two inside baskets by Warmack gave EGF a 68-67 lead with 4:53 to go.

After a 3-pointer by Tyler McCollum gave the Panthers a 70-68 lead with 2:51 showing, Holy and Warmack hit jumpers to give EGF a 73-72 lead with 1:37 to play.

Jordan McCollum's jump shot put Park Rapids in front 74-73 with 1:02 left before Misialek hit a free throw with :06 remaining in regulation to tie the game at 74-74 as EGF forced overtime.

Both teams traded baskets in the first overtime as a jumper by Tyler McCollum, a layup by Johnson and a 3-pointer by Jordan McCollum were offset by layups by Warmack and Misialek and a 3-pointer by Misialek. Jordan McCollum hit two free throws to give the Panthers an 83-81 lead with :36 showing before Warmack scored inside with :15 left to tie the game. Misialek missed two free throws with :02 remaining as the game went into a second overtime.

After Warmack opened the second extra session with a layup, Tyler McCollum hit a 3-pointer to give the Panthers an 86-85 lead at the 3:01 mark. A free throw by Misialek and layup by Warmack gave EGF an 88-86 lead at the 2:05 mark before Jewison's jumper tied the game at 88-88 with :57 remaining.

The Green Wave ran down the clock to set up Warmack's game-winning layup.

Warmack finished with a game-high 33 points while Frydenlund hit six 3-pointers to join Misialek with 18 points. Holy also scored in double figures with 10 points as EGF improved to 18-5 on the season with its 11th win in a row.

Kyle Goplerud scored 19 of his team-high 21 points in the first half while Tyler McCollum scored all of his 20 points in the second half. Tyler McCollum also led the way with 14 assists. Johnson had 19 points, six rebounds and four steals while Jordan McCollum added 18 points. Chris Goplerud led the way with eight rebounds as the Panthers fell to 7-15 on the season.
