As chilly weather creeps in, be a step ahead by being prepared for bad weather.

It's still beautiful outside with the changing of the season but soon winter will be here. Make sure to prepare well before that day arrives.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) recognizes the month of September as "National Emergency Preparedness Month." Before the cold weather hits and snow covers the ground, make sure to have an emergency kit prepared in the trunk of your vehicle.

A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency.

FEMA suggests keeping the following supplies in your car in case of an emergency:

Jumper cables, flashlights and extra batteries, First Aid Kit and necessary medications, snacks, water, AM/FM radio, cat litter or sand (for traction), shovel, ice scraper, warm cloths and blankets. FEMA also suggests having a fully-charged cell phone and phone charger.

While we hope the cold and snow is months away, we know weather is unpredictable in northern Minnesota. Take a few minutes to make sure you have some supplies stashed away just in case.

For more information on emergency preparedness and how to maintain an emergency kit in your vehicle, go to www.ready.gov.
