Edith Johnson

Edith M. Johnson, 97, of Detroit Lakes, died Sunday, November 9, 2008 at Lamplighter Manor in Detroit Lakes.

Edith was born to Henry and Sena (Thompson) Holm on Sept. 29, 1911 in Moorhead. She was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, and graduated from Detroit Lakes High School. She received her teaching certificate in Detroit Lakes, and taught in Rochert and the Lake Eunice Township area.

Edith married Walfrid Johnson on Oct. 11, 1936 in Detroit Lakes. Together they owned and operated L.B. Hartz Grocery Store from 1940 to 1962. After they sold the grocery store, Edith worked for J.C. Penny Department Store and later, the First National Bank as a teller, until retiring in 1985.

As the family was growing, Edith and Wally enjoyed traveling with their children, and later in their retirement years, they continued their love for seeing the world. Edith was an active member of Trinity Lutheran Church, where she served on the building committee in the 1960s, and was a member of the church choir and women's circle.

Edith was a cancer survivor of 32 years, and enjoyed participating in the Becker County Relay For Life. Music was a big part of her life. She loved playing her banjo, omni chord, xylophone and harmonizing with her parents, siblings, husband and children. She also enjoyed crafts and puzzles. Edith was a member of the Sons of Norway, the Sons of Norway Folk Dancing Group and the Business Professional Women's Club, where she was a recipient of the Business Professional Woman of the Year Award.

Edith is survived by her son, Dean (Patricia) Johnson of Bloomington, Minn.; daughter, DeAnn Gottsman of Detroit Lakes; two granddaughters and five great grandchildren as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Edith in death were her parents; husband Walfrid (1996); son Terry; son-in-law, Barry Gottsman; three brothers and six sisters.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 11 at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 12 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Detroit Lakes, with interment following at Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
