Dustin Bethel has completed his Eagle Scout project, a culmination of a Boy Scout's career.

Bethel, almost 17, is a junior at Park Rapids Area High School. His project included constructing a nine-hole disc golf course at Heartland Park.

Players throw discs to baskets along a course, similar to golf.

"I'm a golfer so it kind of fit because it's similar," Bethel said.

Hubbard County was interested in developing a disc golf course and was looking for someone to head up the project. Bethel thought the project would work well for an Eagle Scout project.

"I worked a lot with Greg Hensel. He was my mentor throughout," Bethel said.

The project was approved by the Eagle board and then Bethel went to the county parks board meeting.

"At first I was maybe going to make the baskets but that didn't work out," Bethel said.

The county had set aside some money for the project and purchased the disc golf baskets.

Bethel rounded up volunteers to help install the baskets at the park. It was completed over the weekend.

"I've been in Scouts since first grade. I've always had my eyes set on the Eagle award," Bethel said.

Now that the project is completed Bethel said, "It's quite a bit of weight off my shoulders."
