Law enforcement officers from around Minnesota will be placing extra emphasis this Saturday on impaired driving enforcement.

"We would rather have drivers plan ahead not to drink and drive instead of having to make arrests or have needless tragedies occur," State Patrol Sgt. Jesse Grabow said in a news release.

State, county and local officers will participate in the effort.

The drunken driving crackdown Saturday coincides with St. Patrick's Day. In 2007, the last time when St. Patrick's Day fell on a Saturday, there were 527 arrests statewide for DWI and three alcohol-related traffic deaths.

Drivers are encouraged to support this project by planning ahead not to drink and drive and report impaired drivers.
