Former Silver Bay, Minn., resident Duane J. Haas, 77, of Frazee, died Sunday, May 4, 2008 at St Mary's Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.
Duane Joseph Haas was born to Ervin and Gertrude (Hohn) Haas on March 26, 1931 in Perham. He was raised in Silver Leaf Township, and attended Country School District 71 and Frazee High School, graduating in 1949. After graduation, he worked on the family farm until he was drafted into the United States Army, where he served from 1953-55. After his years in the service, Duane returned to Frazee, then moved to Alaska, and back to Frazee again. He later moved to Silver Bay and worked for many years at the Reserve Mining Company in a taconite plant. After retirement, he stayed in Silver Bay, doing some aerial photography. In November 2007, he moved to the Frazee Care Center.
Norman had been interested in airplanes since childhood, and became an avid flyer. He was an
active member of the VFW in Silver Bay, where he served as past post commander. Duane enjoyed his days at the deer camp.
Surviving Duane are his two brothers, Don (Sue) Haas of Saginaw, Texas, and Eugene "Gene" Haas of McAlester, Okla.; as well as a niece and three nephews. His parents and a sister-in-law, Catherine Haas, preceded him in death.
Visitation is scheduled from 4-7 p.m. on Friday, May 9, at the Furey Funeral Home in Frazee, with a Rosary at 6 p.m., continuing for one hour prior to the funeral at the church on Saturday.
Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, May 10, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Frazee, with the Rev. Joe DeCrans officiating. Burial will follow the service at Sacred Heart Catholic Cemetery in Frazee.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the Furey Funeral Home, Frazee.
