Driver hospitalized after rollover on Highway 34 in Park Rapids
An elderly man was taken by ambulance to St. Joseph's Area Health Service following a one-car rollover on Highway 34 in Park Rapids.
The accident, near Thielen Motors, occurred when the westbound vehicle struck a light pole after going over the curb, then rolled. The accident occurred about 3:30 p.m.
Thielen sales consultant Brent Trauger was on the scene just as the vehicle tipped up on its side.
"He may have had a medical condition," Trauger speculated. Trauger said the man was already trying to get out of the vehicle as sales associates from the car dealership raced to offer assistance.
"The first thing he said was, 'Where's my oxygen?'" Trauger said.
The driver was ambulatory at the scene and being attended to by ambulance personnel.
An ambulance later transported him to the hospital.
The light pole toppled across both westbound lanes of Highway 34, causing numerous law enforcement officers to try to reroute traffic on the busy highway.
Ambulance personnel treated the man at the scene for a gash on his arm.
