Downtown Park Rapids construction hampered by wet conditions

Uncooperative weather early in the week put a stop to some of the downtown Park Rapids construction. Also, one of the new water services under Main Avenue sprung a leak overnight Thursday.

"It's unfortunate," said project engineer Jon Olson. "But RL Larson was on top of this and were working on it as soon as it was discovered."

Friday morning crews dug up a portion of Main Avenue between Second and Third Street to fix the leak. Olson said it was unknown what caused the leak at this point but it was an issue with the pipe or curb stop.

Despite the hiccup, some progress was made this week.

Aggregate work was able to progress and side streets were on schedule for paving by the end of the week. Paving was done on the east half of Third Street and the sidewalk was poured on Second Street.

Eighth Street was opened to traffic, which allowed crews to start work on the next phase of the project.

Sidewalk work and paving were scheduled to continue today (Saturday) to take advantage of the nice weather. Decorative concrete work is scheduled to start early this next week and bituminous paving is expected to be complete by midweek.

One layer of bituminous will cover the side streets in downtown. A second layer will be placed later in the summer.

"The big thing is making sure everything looks good for the big weekend (Fourth of July)," Olson said.

Crews will be cleaning up the streets that became dirty because of the rain.

He is also working with businesses along the southern portion of Main Avenue to make sure there is adequate access for customers.

Weekly meetings will continue at 8 a.m. Thursdays at Bella Caffé.
