Downtown construction under way

Construction started this week in downtown Park Rapids with layers of asphalt removed from side streets between 2nd and 4th streets. Removal of sidewalks and underground utilities will start this week, with businesses being switched to temporary water.

The tentative completion date for Phase two is June 30.

Granite inlays of area lakes will start to be installed this week, as well.

Project engineer Jon Olson didn't have much to report this week as construction was just beginning. He said parking doesn't seem to be an issue but there has been increased traffic at the 5th Street intersection, resulting in large potholes.

Crews will keep an eye on that intersection and make sure it is fixed so people can drive on it, he said.

Parking is available along Main Avenue and along Highway 71 and Pleasant Avenue. City parking lots are also available.

Construction crews will be working with individual business owners about access issues. Some of the alleys will have work done as well, which means some businesses might be without rear access at some points.

A temporary mail drop box is located on Highway 71 at the Post Office.

Weekly construction meetings will be held at 8 a.m. Thursdays at Bella Caffé. The next meeting is Thursday, May 5.
