Sweeping the three doubles titles led the Park Rapids girls tennis team to a runner-up finish at Saturday's Mid-State Conference tournament at the Depot Courts and Century School courts.


Staples-Motley repeated as conference champs by sweeping the singles titles and compiling 37 points. Park Rapids was second with 34 points while Pequot Lakes finished third with 30 points in this seven-team tournament.

Alyssa Carlson and Christina Smith, the No. 2 seed, lost only six games in winning the title at No. 1 doubles. Carlson and Smith defeated the top seed, Staples-Motley's Emma Koskiniemi and Maggie O'Keefe, 6-2, 6-0 in the title match. Koskiniemi and O'Keefe defeated the Park Rapids duo 6-1, 6-0 in a dual meet last Tuesday.

Karly Dickinson and Allie Girtz lived up to their No. 1 seed by defeating the No. 2 seed, Staples-Motley's Annie Kautto and Brooke Wolhowe, 6-2, 6-0 in the championship match. Dickinson and Girtz defeated that Staples duo in three sets last Tuesday.

Bonnie Baumgartner and Lexi Burlingame received the No. 3 seed, but defeated Staples-Motley's Hallie Olsen and Kelsey Zetah (the No. 2 seed) 6-1, 6-4 in the semifinals and Pequot Lakes' Whitney Swenson and Lauren Bengtson (the No. 1 seed) 6-1, 6-2 in the title match. Olsen and Zetah had defeated the Park Rapids duo 6-3, 6-3 last Tuesday.

Julia Renner backed up her No. 2 seed at No. 2 singles, falling to top-seeded Mikayla Wing of Staples-Motley 6-4, 6-1 in the championship match.

Lydia Schaum, who was the No. 3 seed, advanced to the finals at No. 3 singles before dropping a 6-0, 6-2 decision to top-seeded Lucy Zapata of Staples-Motley in the finals.

Bailey LaCoursiere, the No. 3 seed at No. 1 singles, and Katie Walsh, the No. 3 seed at No. 4 singles, both placed fourth to round out Park Rapids' lineup.

Panthers blank NYM

The Panthers tuned up for the conference tournament with a 7-0 win over New York Mills Thursday at the Depot Courts.

LaCoursiere, Renner, Schaum and Walsh combined to drop only four games in the four singles matches.

The Panthers also dominated the three doubles matches as Carlson and Smith, Dickinson and Girtz, and Baumgartner and Burlingame combined to lose only six games.

The win gave the Panthers a 9-3 record in dual meets.
