Donald C. Vorwerk, 83, of Detroit Lakes, died at his home on Friday, June 27, 2008, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley and his family.

Don was born to Ernest and Melvina (Looch) Vorwerk on Sept. 13, 1924 in Parshall, N.D. He was baptized in North Dakota. His family moved to Detroit Lakes in 1934. He attended school at Little Floyd Lake District 15.

Don served in the United States Navy from 1942-46. He returned to Detroit Lakes and in the early 1950's, was a motorcycle cop in Detroit Lakes. Don then moved to Seattle, Wash., where he worked for Boeing Aircraft for eight years. He returned to Detroit Lakes in 1967, and began to work for the Minnesota Department of Transportation.

Don married Lorraine (Lundberg) Birky in January 1977 at Sisseton, S.D. He retired from the Minnesota Department of Transportation in 1986.

Don was a lifetime member of VFW Post No. 1223 in Moorhead. He was a Harley-Davidson and airplane enthusiast, but also had a love for music and working with metal. If he needed a special screw or nut, he made it himself, never having to go to the hardware store.

Don is survived by his wife, Lorraine "Corky" Vorwerk of Detroit Lakes; son, Eugene (Sherry) Vorwerk of North Branch, Minn.; five stepchildren, Zane (Barb) Birky of Eden Prairie, Minn., Zoe(Alan) Harnack of Beaver Creek, Minn., Calene (David)Williams of Roseville, Calif., Rachele (Roger) Taylor of Lakeville, Minn., and Memory (John) Grones of Tamarack, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; a brother, Roy (Alice) Vorwerk of Grapeview, Wash.; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Preceding Don in death were his parents; brother, Arnie; and two sisters, Sylvia Gross and Viola Hamre.

Visitation will be from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at West-Kjos Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, with interment following at Oak Grove Cemetery, Detroit Lakes.
