Donald Dale Tyge was born to Oliver and Addie (Triggs) Tyge on Dec. 26, 1927 in Ayrshire, Iowa. At age seven, he moved with his family to the Ponsford, area where he grew up and attended Round Lake Country School. Donald enlisted in the United States Army on March 7, 1946, and he served in occupied Japan during World War II. He was honorably discharged from the army on March 9, 1954. Following his service to his country, Donald married Darlene Kimball on April 23, 1955 in Minneapolis. This union was blessed with four children: Rodney, Becky, Shelly and Sherri.

In the 1960s, Don moved with his family to Rock Port, Mo., where his sister, Addi, made her home. Don worked there as an auto mechanic for the Texaco station, and also drove an LP truck. Don and his family later returned to the Osage-Ponsford area, where he worked as a logger and sawyer for many years.

Don loved the out-of-doors, and especially enjoyed hunting. He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and always kept a large pot of coffee available for the folks who would stop by for a daily visit. He was a member of the Otto Hendrickson American Legion Post 212 in Park Rapids. Each spring he looked forward to planting a large vegetable garden that he would nurture to share with family and friends.

Don's life knew heartache, as he and Darlene lost three of their four children. He devoted his life to his beloved wife Darlene, who was in a wheelchair for 25 years before her passing in 2003, and he also lost his twin brother, Darild, who died in 2007.

Above all, Don devoted his life to his wife and children, and was especially proud of his daughter, Becky, her husband Mark and his grandsons, Matt and Jacob.

Don is survived by his daughter, Becky (Mark) Lalli of Park Rapids; two grandsons; one sister, Addie Webster of Rock Port, Mo.; one brother, Al (Vollie) Tyge of Detroit Lakes; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Preceding Don in death were his parents; his wife, Darlene; three children, Rodney, Shelly and Sherri; five sisters; and five brothers.

Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, March 27 at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids, continuing for one hour prior to services on Friday.

Funeral services are scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, March 28, at the Jones-Pearson Funeral Home in Park Rapids with the Rev. Art Wood officiating. Casket bearers will be Mark Lalli, Matthew Lalli, Marvin Brown, Randy Tyge, Dale Tyge and Terry Tretbar. Honorary casket bearers will be the residents and nursing staff of the Heritage Living Center in Park Rapids.
