Donald Wayne Hess was born on December 5, 1920 to Floyd and Mary (Dearholt) Hess in Wing River Township. He grew up on the farm, attending District #2 school through the 8th grade. Growing up close to the river had a big influence on his love of fishing which he avidly participated in his whole life.

Don was united in married to Margaret Peterson on October 24, 1941 and spent most of their first year living in a lumber camp tent in northern Minnesota. The marriage survived that and 69 years of making memories together. They resided in Wing River township until Don’s retirement in 1981 from farming. They moved to the Park Rapids area and spent 24 years there making enduring friendships, until moving back to their home area in 2005. Never having children, Don enjoyed his nieces and nephews who will cherish fond memories of him. Don was active in the Church of Christ, occasionally providing a sermon when called upon. He loved working with wood, both from a lumbering standpoint and creating everything from decoys to entire barns.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Mary; wife, Margaret; brother Richard and sister Dora Mae (Robert) Weiher.

He is survived by his brother Douglas (Joan) of Verndale, along with many nieces & nephews, great-nieces & great-nephews, and a host of friends.
