DL man gets 30 months in domestic assault case
A Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison on a felony charge of violating a restraining order. Marvin Joseph Bellecourt, 37, of 61 Curry Ave. Detroit Lakes was also charged with domestic assault, making terroristic threats and false imprisonment/restraint, all felonies. The last two counts were dropped in a plea agreement.
According to court records:
An order for protection was issued May 14 for a woman who has been in a relationship with Bellecourt since 2006.
On Jan. 11 a White Earth police officer was dispatched to an assault complaint at a residence on Cherry Lake Road. The woman told him that Bellcourt had assaulted her during the early morning hours.
He was extremely intoxicated and they had an argument. He allegedly hit her in the face several times and threatened to kill her if she left the room.
He repeatedly slammed the door on her as she tried to get past him and leave the room. Eventually a friend heard the woman yelling and was able to get her out of the residence.
He was sentenced Wednesday by District Judge Peter Irvine, who ordered him to serve 30 months in prison, with credit for 16 days served in jail. He was fined $50 plus court fees, to be taken from prison pay. He was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
