A Detroit Lakes man has been sentenced to more than two years in prison for assaulting a 12-year-old boy that was in his care.

Kevin Marlen Blomseth, 40, of 1760 Long Bridge Road, Detroit Lakes was convicted by a jury Jan. 15 of felony malicious punishment of a child and felony domestic assault.

According to court records:

On April 12 at 10:25 p.m., a vehicle pulled up to the Detroit Lakes police station to report an assault to an officer in the parking lot there.

The officer was told that Blomseth gave two black eyes to a 12-year-old boy in his care. The officer did a welfare check on the boy and noted that the right eye was black and there were markings under the right eye.

At the time, Blomseth lived in the boy's home, was engaged to his mother, and cared for the boy and his siblings.

Investigation revealed that at 12:30 a.m. on April 11, Blomseth came home, went to the boy's bedroom and woke him up because he was angry that he had removed items from Blomseth's pickup truck.

He hit the boy in the face, knocking him down, and continued to hit him a half-dozen times.

Blomseth was previously convicted of domestic assault and violating a restraining order in 2004 and making terroristic threats in 2000, according to court records.

Blomseth was sentenced Wednesday by District Judge Joe Evans to 27 months in prison. He was granted credit for 29 days served in jail, and fined $50 plus court fees.

The boy no longer lives with Blomseth and his mother, and has a no-contact order against Blomseth.
