DL liquor sales up by $500,000

According to Mayor Matt Brenk, 2013 was a good year in Detroit Lakes.

Brenk gave his State of the City address Thursday afternoon prior to the city’s annual planning meeting.

“Much like 2011 and 2012, we continue to see strong, steady growth,” he said. “Detroit Lakes is already a great city in so many ways, and we continue to attract attention as we enhance our community each year.”

He touched on each department within the city, giving the highlights for the year:

  • After a bit of a chaotic start to the year at the liquor store with a change in managers, liquor sales soared for the year, increasing $500,000 in sales. Gross sales totaled nearly $5.5 million for 2013 – a 10.4 percent increase over 2012. Sales were an all-time high for Lakes Liquor.
  • The city’s favorable credit rating and strong financial standing has earned it the AA- Stable rating.
  • The city also collected about $340,000 in 2013 from the food and beverage tax, which was divided between several projects including lakes, trails and parking.
  • Housing was up in Detroit Lakes last year. Forty-three new houses were built, totaling over $8 million in residential construction dollars, the highest in the last four years. Commercial building also saw lots of activity with multiple projects like the Detroit Mountain facility, I’ll Tile & Stone, Caribou Coffee, Community Alliance Church and more.
  • The development authority assisted with several large projects in 2013, including the purchase of the former Miguel’s property, and the city then sent out requests for proposals on development of the land. Though it didn’t receive any proposals, it did spark some interest with a couple developers.
  • In public safety, Fire Chief Dave Baer retired and Scott Flynn took over the post.
  • The police department saw some personnel changes with a couple resignations from officers and three new hires being brought on board.
  • In 2013, the public works department swept 6,056 miles of streets in Detroit Lakes, collecting and removing 5,097 tons of debris.
  • The park department took care of 314 acres of green space in 2013, along with the playgrounds, beach, rinks, tracks, Pavilion, bandshell and other facilities.
  • Progress continues on the Heartland Trail, with the culvert being built under Highway 10 east of town. The city also approved expanding the trail from the underpass to McKinley Avenue.
  • The city received a Legacy grant for $495,000 for the purchase of Upstream Sucker Creek Preserve.
  • The Public Utilities department made many upgrades in 2013 and is continuing to do so this year. There have been several energy-saving projects completed, with lighting, facilities and rebate programs.
  • An engineering firm has been hired to analyze the city’s wastewater system for an upcoming overhaul.

Brenk said overall, 2013 was a good year.

“We remain financially strong, we have good facilities and amenities, we are relatively diverse and prosperous in our commercial-industrial segment, in our retail, our service and tourism sectors, and lastly, we have good planning for the future of the city that continues to be supported by our citizens.”

He asked the council, staff and committees to continue supporting flowering rush and AIS research and treatment, the Heartland Trail and city trail system, and surfacing the parking lot at the Detroit Mountain Recreation Area with food and beverage tax funds.

He thanked the council aldermen, department heads, staff and the citizens of Detroit Lakes.

“Detroit Lakes is truly a great place to live, work and visit,” he said.
