Depth helps Panthers repeat as Section 8A True Team champions

Depth once again was the difference as the Park Rapids girls swimming and diving team repeated as Section 8A True Team champions Saturday at Detroit Lakes.

The Panthers scored at least 200 points in the three relays and at least 83 points in the individual events in compiling 1,586 points to top the nine-team field. Perham/New York Mills finished a distant second with 1,370 points.

Jessi Andersen's fourth-place score of 291.25 points and Ellen Hoffman's ninth-place score of 272.70 points led the Panthers to 107 points in diving.

Katherine Erickson, Mandy Schirmers, Taylor Graham and Lauren Rossman finished third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:59.81 while Hoffman, Hannah Williams, Tea Nyland and Heather Kniss tied for sixth place with a 2:06.54. Jessi Andersen, Kayla Andersen, Christina Mackley and Alex Pederson followed with a 2:07.07 for eighth place as the Panthers scored 233 points in the opening relay.

Emily Creager won the 200 freestyle in 2:06.69 as the Panthers scored 83 points in that event before Schirmers took third in the 200 individual medley in 2:26.94. The Panthers scored 104 points in that event.

Park Rapids added 102 points to its total in the 50 freestyle as Allycia Zinke clocked a sixth-place time of 27.21 and Rossman followed in 27.54.

The 100 butterfly was the Panthers' best individual event as Zinke's runner-up 1:06.45, Graham's fifth-place 1:08.09 and Nyland's seventh-place 1:09.20 resulted in 122 points.

After Creager's runner-up 58.18 led the Panthers to 97 points in the 100 freestyle, Erickson's winning time of 5:38.31 and Williams' ninth-place 6:14.64 in the 500 freestyle helped add 108 more points to the team total.

Park Rapids scored 206 points in the 200 freestyle relay. Zinke, Schirmers, Rossman and Creager finished fourth in 1:49.22 while Kayla Andersen, Kniss, Graham and Alyza Edevold took eighth in 1:54.38.

In the 100 backstroke, the Panthers scored 105 points behind Erickson's runner-up 1:03.84 and Hoffman's ninth-place 1:11.46.

Schirmers followed with a runner-up 1:13.71 in the 100 breaststroke. Williams was seventh in 1:17.95, Kayla Andersen finished ninth in 1:18.31 and Jessie O'Hern took 11th in 1:20.49 as the Panthers scored 119 points in the final individual event.

Park Rapids ended the meet by scoring 200 points in the 400 freestyle relay. Erickson, Zinke, Williams and Creager clocked a 3:57.41 for second place while Edevold, Nyland, Mackley and Hoffman finished ninth in 4:18.28.

The top eight individuals received medals. The Panthers earned 13 medals in the individual events and had six relays earn medals.

"The girls swam really, really well. They were ready. We told them to swim with emotion and with confidence and they did," said Park Rapids head coach Todd Fritze. "We put together four good medley relays and that set the tone. We only won two events, but we have a lot of depth. Everybody contributed. Everyone had a job to do and they all did it."

Park Rapids will compete in the state Class A True Team meet Thursday at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. The Panthers finished ninth out of 12 teams at last year's state meet with 1,178.50 points.
