Delores May Knutson
Delores May (Whitmer) Knutson, 70, of Lake Itasca, died Thursday, Jan. 10, 2013 at her home after a courageous battle with cancer.
Delores was born June 13, 1942 to Mervil and Erma (Black) Whitmer in Buffalo, N.Y. Delores was the third of five children. She was raised by her grandmother Nora Sebring Rody. She was baptized, had her first communion and was confirmed at St. Joseph's Cathedral in Buffalo, N.Y. Delores attended school in Buffalo, N.Y.
Delores moved to California in 1966 where she met Milton Knutson. They were married in Reno, Nev. on Aug. 10, 1968. They made their home in Long Beach, Calif., Great Lakes, Ill., and moved to Lake Itasca in 1976 where they have lived since.
Delores was a stay-at-home mom through the years Kim and Troy attended school. After their graduations, Delores worked at World of Christmas. She went to work for the University of Minnesota at the Itasca State Park Biological Station where she stayed until her retirement in 2008. She absolutely loved the people and the students at the station. Many of the students did their bird studies at Milton and Delores's home at Lake Itasca.
One of the greatest gifts Milton and Delores shared was the importance of family and community. They supported both and loved doing so. From the family reunions to the community events, they cherished each and every moment along with each and every person.
Delores is survived by her daughter Kim (Brian) Schlotfeldt, Moorhead; son Troy (Lynn) Knutson, Longmont, Colo.; grandchildren Ashley (Sean Deichert) Schlotfeldt, Tyler Schlotfeldt, Moorhead, Brandon Knutson, Fort Collins, Colo., and Emily Knutson, Longmont, Colo.; aunt Ruth Salter, Puyallup, Wash.; sister Bonnie Roneker, Depew, N.Y.; brothers-in-law Edwin (Florine) Knutson, Lake Park, Clayton (June) Knutson, Concord, Calif.; sisters-in-law, Marilyn Steffan, Collumbus, N.M., Elaine (Jesse) Laing, Corpis Cristi, Texas, Connie (Alex) Kossick, Audubon, Minn.; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband Milton; father, Mervil; mother, Erma; brother, Jack Whitmer; sisters, Edith Whitmer and Karen Mrugalski.
Funeral service: 11 a.m. Monday, Jan. 14 at Faith Lutheran Church in Bagley, with Rev. Steve McCaughan officiating.
Visitation: 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 13 at Cease Family Funeral Home Chapel in Bagley.
Interment: Pine Grove Cemetery at Lake Itasca.
